June 16th, 2009 social networks can cause car accident a new study claims

A new study released by a British research team has found that road accidents are increasingly being caused as a direct result of people using social networks while they drive.

Sites like Twitter and Facebook allow users to update their social networking profiles with mobile phones and blackberry devices. As a result these sites are now increasingly responsible for accidents on the road according to business insurance research company

Along with Facebook and Twitter, the report also found that drivers using their blackberry and mobile phones are potentially fatal distractions for drivers. One van insurance company analysed the “tweets” of Twitter users to see if they tweeted while the used their car.

One Tweet said, “Driving with my knees and peeling an orange…Probably not the safest thing to be doing.”

Another claimed to be driving a school bus, while one said: “Intoxicated driving. Let’s hope this works out.”

The British research found that almost half the number of motorists surveyed admitted they had broken the law by making phone calls and texting while driving.

More than a third said they found it impossible to ignore a mobile alert while driving, while one in five admitted to rummaging through a handbag, glovebox or pocket to find a mobile phone while driving.
