Science fiction has built up the idea of artificial intelligence for years. Giving machines intelligence often spells the end of mankind as they then rise up against their creators and violently free themselves from oppression. I’ve never really had an interest in artificial intelligence until recently when I started studying the very basics at university. The only AI Science Fiction that’s ever actually interested me was ‘Blade Runner’ and its novel, ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ written by Philip K. Dick. The subtext of the story deals with AI becoming self-aware but still unaware of its true nature, a concept that interested me greatly. Real AI is quite fascinating and in many ways entirely different to what I expected.

1. The ability of a computer or other machine to perform those activities that are normally thought to require intelligence.
2. The branch of computer science concerned with the development of machines having this ability.
If you take a look at this you may notice that the field of AI is actually far broader than many people give it credit for. Even the Google search engine can be said to incorporate some of the research done in AI. The definition of AI and intelligence itself sometimes varies but it’s probably safe to say that a simple explanation is that if a machine exhibits a measure of intelligence in some area it can be called AI.
The AI of movies is usually entirely self aware, emotive, and for all intents and purposes ‘alive’. It is capable of learning, reasoning, explaining and deceiving. The AI I’ve experienced (and this is very basic, scratching only the surface of the depth of studies into AI) is far more specialized, focusing on just one aspect of a problem that could potentially be much larger. There are various areas of research being carried out into creating the humanoid machines of science fiction, but as yet most are still restricted to the realms of the imagination. One very impressive piece of technology is the Honda ASIMO project. This project has created a humanoid robot with some remarkable features. I’m not entirely sure if there’s really a practical use for this (I think they’re just trying to justify their funding with the applications mentioned on the website) but it scores points for being one of the coolest uses of technology I’ve ever seen. From what I can tell ASIMO isn’t intended to be a particularly human robot beyond superficial levels. He doesn’t exhibit emotion or learn outside of his constraints (he can learn areas and navigate them etc. but you couldn’t just sit down and teach him to play the piano without getting in and doing some serious reprogramming). He’s not going to be fooling anyone into believing that he’s human any time soon.

The Turing Test is a measure of Artificial Intelligence that was created by Alan Turing. He stated that the question of whether or not machines could think was too vague, and proposed a test that was more specific. His test, without going into too much detail, involved trying to get a computer to fool people into believing that it was human. The people would type a question into a console and receive a response from the computer on the other side. While there has been much work done on systems trying to pass the Turing test, none of them have succeeded yet. There has also been research done into creating machines that can exhibit emotions. However, we’re still a long way off from seeing a machine that can appear to be alive.

The early excitement over AI led to developers trying to create a generic reasoning problem solver that could search through a mass of knowledge that it has acquired and find solutions to any problem that was thrown at it. Unfortunately this proved almost impossible in practice. Today’s AI tends to focus on very specific problems and knowledge areas. Expert Systems are programs that are “Experts” in a specific field and can answer queries related to only that field. Their applications include medical diagnosis, credit card application, and other fields where data is to be analyzed.

I haven’t even begun to explore the true extent of AI in this article, but maybe I’ve piqued your interest. If you want to look into it further, try reading the Wikipedia (free on-line encyclopedia) entry and maybe downloading something like Prolog to have a go and see what real AI is like. I find it quite interesting because it involves a similar mindset to programming as you attempt to break a problem down enough for a computer to understand it, but of course the actual implementation is very different.

Here’s a fun thing to try. Open a copy of ALICE (http://www.alicebot.org/), start a conversation with a friend on your messenger program of choice, feed their responses into ALICE and send the program’s responses back. See how long it takes before they either work out what’s happening or get annoyed and block you (which has been the most common result of my experimentations). emails short and to the point. If you do most of your
marketing by email set up blocks of time to get it done.

* If you need to, completely shut off your email program
when you are working on important projects. Cold Turkey is
sometimes the best and quickest way to break habits. And
remember, when habits hurt YOU change them.

It’s no wonder the flower’s oil has great healing properties, both physically and emotionally, for the human heart.

Rose’s health Benefits

With it’s considerable therapeutic and aesthetic value, the ‘queen of the flowers’ had a special place in medicine and perfumery in the ancient civilizations of Persia, Egypt, India, Greece and Rome. The modern healing tradition of the extract of rose began in the 17 th century with the writings of English physician Nicholas Culpeper. The herbalist described the use of red roses to strengthen the heart, it’s cooling and astringent actions, and its effect on headaches and tired eyes. Perhaps inspiring it’s use as a beauty tonic ‘par-excellence’, he went on to suggest it’s use as a remedy for a variety of skin complaints.

In aromatherapy, the psychological effects are wondrous for those with a broken heart, or other emotional wounds. Rose oil calms and supports the heart center, inspiring a sense of happiness and well-being. When rejection or loss has injured one’s ability to love and nurture, either themselves or those around them, rose oil can bring sweet and gentle comfort and allow an emotional ‘re-opening’.

Use in Aromatherapy

It is the Bulgarian Damask rose, or Rosa Damacena, most often used in aromatherapy. The oil of this 36-petaled beauty is available in two forms: the ‘otto’, or true essential oil, and the ‘absolute’. Harvest of the flowers occurs in the early morning, before the sun’s rays has warmed away the aroma. Rose otto is made in a two step steam-distillation process; the first distillation yields an essential oil and a large amount of ‘rose water’. The water is again distilled, producing an oil which is combined with that from the first distillation.

The absolute is made with a different process entirely. Similar in a way to ‘effleurage’ (the pressing of petals in fat to produce an extract), the flowers are processed in a solvent, with a wax-like ‘concrete’ being produced. Through a second extraction of the concrete, rose absolute is yielded. This method is significantly more efficient than steam distillation, producing nearly 7 pounds of oil per 10,000 pounds of roses (distillation yields 1 pound oil per 10,000 pounds of roses), with a corresponding lower cost. Does one produce a better oil? There is certainly debate; while some argue that traces of solvent are likely to exist in the absolute, others claim the heat of distillation does not result in a true representation of the flower. And as with either method, the quality and effect of the oil varies greatly with the experience and care of the manufacturer – the answer truly lies with the individual and the application.

Using Rose

Oil of rose can be utilized in a number of ways; it is very gentle, being suitable for use on the skin ‘neat’, in massage oil, and in a bath, as well as in a diffuser. As a perfume, the absolute can be worn directly on the skin – it’s ‘tenacious’ quality will have the aroma slowly released for many hours. For therapeutic use for the emotions, a dilution of 10% of otto or absolute in jojoba oil is often used, being massaged into the heart area – a diffuser is very effective for this purpose as well. The absolute or otto can also be added in small amounts to any skin cream, though using a home-made natural recipe is often the nicest. Rose water, or hydrosol, the water resulting from the distillation process of rose otto, can also be used directly on the skin, with it’s mild astringent and toning properties.

A rose and lavender facial cream can be made using the following recipe:

Melt ounce of beeswax in 4 ounces of jojoba using a double boiler. Add 3 ounces of distilled water in a thin stream while stirring vigorously with a wire whisk. Remove from heat and continue stirring while adding 20 drops of rose oil (absolute or otto) and 15 drops of lavender. Allow to cool, then enjoy this wonderful homemade cream for sensitive skin.

There are, of course, many ways to enjoy rose oil’s benefits. It is revered on many levels, from its pure aesthetic aromatic beauty, to its physiological healing and emotional uplifting. True rose oil, with its great depth and sweetness, is easily appreciated by almost all who experience this natural wonder.

Can we find erosion patterns on Mars, which will lead us to where life is? Find life on the Mars Desert Landscape is proving to be a little problematic for the NASA Mars Rover, but this does not mean it does not exist. After all there is even life in the Gobe Desert here on Earth, although it is very scares. Perhaps this is the same on Mars. If we use this approach to finding such patterns, then exactly what should we be looking for? Can we predict the patterns which will most likely lead us to life or provide clues as to where we should be looking?

Predicting patterns is not as difficult as it seems really if we start at the beginning and look forward rather than look at the now and try to figure the ‘how’. Is it possible to have nearly the same patterns of erosion in more than one place, planet or region? I would submit that it is possible. They say no two fingerprints are the same, yet, we now know that is not true, some are so similar that recognition software cannot tell them apart. In fact people have been convicted of crimes having similar fingerprints.

We should be looking at all the patterns of erosion on the Earth and Mars, perhaps these regions share something in common? Perhaps the electromagnetic signatures of the rocks or resonance of the ion bonding and the acoustic pattern created by wind are similar. Just like two fingerprints contain some sort of genetic similarities. Would the study of patterns of erosion help us in studying liquid flows, locating minerals for mining, oil for extraction, finding areas of healthy areas for organic growth? When shopping for a new TV it’s important to determine which
technology is best suited for your needs. In the world of flat
panel televisions, you’ll have to choose between a plasma
television and an LCD. Obviously, the technologies behind these
units are quite different. Plasma televisions use gases like
xenon and argon to create their pictures. LCDs use a layer of
electrically responsive crystals that can be altered to vary the
spectrum of light shining through at various locations on the
screen. How will you know which technology to choose? Here are
some observations that may help you decide.

Both LCDs and newer plasma televisions have comparable life
spans. The LCD is purported to last several years longer, but
both units will last for decades. Also, the picture quality with
both of these units is about the same. Some LCDs provide a more
crisp resolution, but on the whole there is little difference.
Finally, newer generations of plasma televisions have reduced
power consumptions comparable to that of LCDs. This previous
advantage was corrected from the power vacuum first-generation
plasma units. LCDs don’t have to worry about phosphors and
aren’t at risk for burn-in. This difference is being corrected
with each new generation of plasma television. LCDs are also
lighter and thinner than comparably sized plasma televisions.
This is very useful if space if a premium in your home, though
the size difference is only a matter of an inch or two in depth.
LCDs are also considered much less fragile than their plasma
counterparts. These are apparent advantages in favor of an LCD
television, but do these differences really affect you, the
viewer? A thinner television doesn’t always have a superior
picture. In fact, plasma displays are usually brighter and more
vibrant. Also, how often do you carry your plasma television
around? Does its weight and durability really affect your
decision? In the average home, a television remains in the same
spot for years, if not forever.

The factors that should affect your purchase relate more to the
picture. Plasma displays have a greater viewing angle and don’t
lose as much contrast as you move away. A plasma can be viewed
clearly from almost any location in a room, thanks to their 160
degree viewing angle. Also, as you look at larger model
televisions (over 40 inches, for example) you’ll see that plasma
screens are cheaper and maintain a thin profile. LCDs are still
being refined in their larger models. There are functional
considerations to be made as well. Will you be using your plasma
screen as a primary display for your personal computer? If so,
you’d profit from an LCD panel that would display a detailed
computer images more crisply, and with no risk of burn-in.

LCDs have many uses where they are a superior display choice.
Different functions and locations may lead you to purchase an
LCD. However, if you’re just looking for a television, then
plasma is your best bet. Plasma televisions have a list of
advantages over LCDs when it comes to true picture quality,
brightness, and color. LCDs have their niche uses, but a plasma
is a superior choice in television.
