October 7th, 2008 Is your website legal?

So let’s get straight to the point. Is your website legal? Well, in October 2004 we reached the deadline of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), 1995 in which the DDA ordered service providers to make “reasonable adjustments” to the physical features of their premises to ensure the services they provide are accessible to people with disabilities.

The 175 page code of practice for the DDA published in May 2002 specifically mentions websites. The relevant sections are included below.

* 2.13 – 2.17 (p11-13): “What services are affected by the Disability Discrimination Act? An airline company provides a flight reservation and booking service to the public on its website. This is a provision of a service and is subject to the act.” * 5.23 (p71): “For people with visual impairments, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include … accessible websites.” * 5.26 (p68): “For people with hearing disabilities, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include … accessible websites.”

To elaborate on this some more.

“The duty not to refuse or deliberately not provide a service could apply in a case where a service provider has deliberately chosen not to integrate accessibility into his Web site. This might include where a Flash movie is used, but there is no option for a user with a screen reader to skip it.

… A service provider must not provide a lower standard of service to a disabled person, compared to that offered to an able-bodied person. Thus, where a retailer offers an e-commerce facility in addition to its high street shop, if the Web site is inaccessible then the disabled person will be unable to enjoy the convenience of home shopping and will thus be subject to a lower standard of service. “

Source: Martin Sloan (www.dmag.org.uk)

With the legal side of things out of the way there are a number of important benefits to building an accessible website. There are 8.6 million registered disabled people in the UK , totaling 14% of the population (Source: Disability Rights Commission). Two million people in the UK have sight problems and 9% have some form of colour blindness (Source: Institution of Electrical Engineers). There are also 12 million people aged 60 or over, some 21% of the UK population (Source: UK Government). This eventually means that 48% of the population of the UK, not to mention those of other countries could potentially face problems using a website that does not comply with accessibility guidelines. Therefore producing an accessible website could gain you important commercial benefits in the shape of many new customers.

Accessibility is closely linked to the other standards covered in this section, so much so that the W3C launched the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) in order to advise web agencies of strategies to achieve compliance.

The WAI offers three standardized levels of access, from the readily achieved (Priority 1), to one that requires slightly more work (Priority 2), to a master level (Priority 3). Creative Eye can achieve all of the above

“I own a B2B company and the DDA doesn’t apply to me” I hear you say. Well there are some great reasons for designing with accessibility in mind. Accessibility and web standards are so closely linked that many of the benefits cross over. Some of the many benefits include

* Speed of development and updates * Future compatibility with new browsers, PDA’s and mobile devices * Better Search Engine rankings

October 7th, 2008 Whats the Future for Mobile VoIP?

One of the biggest developments in the VoIP industry in recent times has been the growth of mobile VoIP technology. Although still relatively early days for the mobile Voice over IP start-ups such as Truphone, it certainly seems they have the potential to to make some big waves in the industry. Some of the recent longer established mobile operators’ actions seem testament to this fact with T-Mobile recently being forced to allow the use of Truphone over its network, having previously not allowed calls to Truphone allocated numbers.

While a few people suggest that as VoIP prices fall towards zero, this is making it a increasingly difficult industry to make any substantial profit in; the increasing prevalence of cut cost high speed broadband and has resulted in a huge increase in the availability of free Wi-Fi. As a result this is making mobile VoIP operators an increasingly attractive proposition for consumers. The trend in the availability of new ’smart phones’ with the ability to run mobile VoIP client software, at ever decreasing prices is also, it could be argued, creating a tipping point in the industry.

We have recently seen T-Mobile introduce their VoIP service called @home giving people the option of paying a single low monthly flat rate. However whilst the industry is finding customers uncomfortable about getting rid of their fixed phone line completely, mobile VoIP companies have no such issue to contend with. The seamless integration of mobile VoIP software into the functionality of mobile phones, as well as the reduced cost of data-inclusive phone packages has resulted in a predictably fast growth in the mobile VoIP industry.

Currently it has been reported that there are 4 million VoIP users in the United Kingdom, and the growth looks set to continue. How established mobile phone operators will take advantage of this growth remains to be seen but the decision to force T Mobile to allow calls to Truphone customers surely transmits a crystal clear message that rather than try and resist the mobile VoIP operators, the entranched industry monoliths must find a way of working with them.

One problem which may have an influence on the amount of subscribers of mobile Voice over IP is security, with many highly publicized incidents highlighting the vulnerabilities in making calls using VoIP. Another problem to to confront is ‘VoIP phishing’ where people are duped into giving up their personal data of their own free will after taking the ‘bait’ from a thief. This is also indicative of other VoIP security issues where unscrupulous would be thieves can tamper with the caller ID making it look as though they are calling from reputable financial institutions. Once such problems have been dealt with and fears allayed it is likely that mobile VoIP will become will become much more integral to peoples lives as people take the opportunity to turn their mobiles into VoIP phones.

October 7th, 2008 When planning the internet marketing strategy that will work for you

Having an effective internet marketing strategy can be as easy as one, two, three now that there are tools you can use to market your product or service for you. But then there are marketing gimmicks that many owners and designers have fallen into.

Once in awhile you come across a website that looks good with a particular browser but view it with a different browser, and you can’t even read the text on the page. The worst thing that can happen is for most of your visitors to not see and understand what it is you are saying through your site.

It is therefore important that some things should be considered when planning on taking your marketing in this complicated and cruel online business.

First, navigability and functionality should come before artistic excellence. It is useless to make your site a masterpiece if users cannot navigate around it. Even after they reach the main page, they have no clue as to how to go where they want to go.

Images enhance the look of a page. But it is not advisable to go overboard in stuffing your page with loads of images. Remember that most net-surfers use a dial-up connection. The average time to load a page should be no longer than 5 seconds.

If it is longer, the surfer will most probably click away elsewhere. So, within this time, all the images on a page must be loaded as well. To give an estimate, keep the aggregate page size less than 30k.

A couple of more attributes that make your pages load faster are the height and width attributes. Without these, the browser must wait for the image to download since it cannot know how much space to leave for them.

Java is yet another often-misused technology on webpages. There are various things you can do with Java but that does not mean you should do all of them. Java applets are known to run slower, so users experience certain sluggishness in performance.

Besides, Java has been known to crash certain browsers. This is not something everyone likes, especially if it is done for the sole purpose of showing a set of images in a slideshow.

Never underestimate the importance of those meta tags. They can make all the difference between your users coming to your site and going over to your competitors.

Lastly, KISS. Nothing have beaten simplicity yet.

October 2nd, 2008 Poker Affiliates: How To Build An Online Poker Affiliate Empire

Becoming a poker affiliate could not be simpler. All you need is a website, some content and the will to make it work. The next thing that a budding poker entrepreneur should do is joining one of the many affiliate programs available. Signing up to an affiliate site is free, so there is no need for expensive outlays, just click sign up and you’re a step closer to becoming a self-sufficient affiliate.

Online poker affiliate vendors offer new customers the opportunity to promote a number of sites. In return they will offer the new affiliate a reward scheme based on the number of paying customers that they bring in. To help new affiliates achieve this goal, the vendor may offer them a number of marketing tools to entice customers to their sites. These can be banners, pop-ups or just simple text links, but each one carries the customer to the source and the affiliate closer to earning some big money. It is a typical ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’ scenario, as an affiliate you are below the vendor and the poker website. But the important thing is that you can effectively get paid for doing absolutely nothing. Someone else provides the banners and the other marketing tools all the affiliate needs to do is appeal to an audience and they are off. It is a win win situation for everybody, especially when investing in the multi billion dollar industry of online poker. Maybe it’s your turn to get a cut of the action.

Often there will be a choice of two models of income. The first is a CPA, which essentially means that the affiliate receives a one off cash injection of between $75 and $150. The second is a shared revenue model, whereby you receive a small percentage of the overall revenue that the player you have encouraged to join generates. The CPA model is very much a get rich quick model, generating a large initial income, which is liable to dry up if you don’t remain active in seeking new custom. The shared revenue model is a slow building but potentially lucrative avenue. The more people you attract and the more they play poker the more money will be coming your way.

But the real key to building a successful poker affiliate empire is not in simply creating a site that is full of links and pleading for customers. The site that an affiliate builds should be an engaging and even informative place. Enticing customers to try their hand at poker through one of the sites numerous links. By talking about the potential gains of poker playing or the strategies behind it, you can create an interest in the readers mind. It is only through engaging customers that you can truly encourage them to click on your links and part with their money at the poker tables. The more people you can attract the more money there is in it for you, so building an emotive and interesting site is the key to unlock your poker fortune.
