Andrea Yates shocked the nation when she admitted to systematically drowning her five children in their Texas home. This 36-year-old mother had previously been diagnosed with depression and consequently was prescribed antidepressants. Depression is an ancient and prevalent mental condition that has been referenced throughout history in song, poetry and literature. In a depressed state one feels hopeless and experiences an overwhelming sense of despair. Depression immobilizes a person; they lack both the desire and the energy to carry on their usual activities. It afflicts men and women, rich and poor, young and old alike. According to the November 1993 issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, more than one hundred million people throughout the world suffer from depression. Each year, more people seek relief from this disabling mental condition than any medical disease, including the common cold. In 1990 the cost of depression exceeded $43 billion in the United States alone. The economic toll is staggering and includes medical treatment, lost work-time, and depression-related suicide. Why are some people more susceptible to depression than others? Hippocrates, the father of medicine, theorized that we are born into one of four primary temperament styles and that each style has it’s own unique outlook on life; Choleric (aggressive), Sanguine (emotional), Phlegmatic (passive) and Melancholy (analytical). Of these four styles, the introverted Melancholy is the most perfection driven and depression prone. The analytical Melancholy influence gives one tremendous attention to detail but it can also create stress, anxiety and depression. In fact the term melancholy has become synonymous with depression. People with the Melancholy temperament style are by their very nature sensitive, judgmental, and critical. This temperament style becomes depressed primarily due to the fact that they fail to reach their own incredibly high standards. This depression often leads to either suicide and or violence against others. We each have a personal responsibility for taking control over our thoughts. Thoughts are highly creative and they lead to action. Our thoughts create our emotions and our emotions determine our mental state. Perhaps the most practical suggestion I can give people with the Melancholy temperament style for dealing with depression is to guard against the tendency to engage in destructive, negative self-talk. If you consistently obsess on thoughts of self-criticism, you are automatically setting yourself up for depression. Because of your Melancholy nature you need to keep your drive for perfection in balance. Remember to keep your standards and expectations of yourself and others realistic. Set short-term goals and review them frequently. I have never met anyone that was depressed who was actively goal setting. In my opinion, depression is not a mental illness or disease as some might argue, but rather a choice of mental state. No person, condition or circumstance can make you feel depressed without your permission. President Abraham Lincoln was certainly no stranger to depression. Abe came to the conclusion that man is about as happy as he makes his mind up to be! About the Author John Boe, based in Monterey, CA, helps companies recruit, train and motivate top-quality people. | October 19th, 2008 | Joshian Conjectures ( i.e. Superultramodern Scientific Conje |
Following are some conjectures of Dr Kedar Joshi ( i.e. myself ) that are more or less essential to the superultramodern science. 1. Joshian Conjecture of Three Dimensional Space – Basis : 2. Joshian Conjecture of No Spatial Mechanism – 3. Joshian Conjecture of Flawed Reason – One of the basic principles of the superultramodern science, viz. ‘anything may be possible, for that which is believed to be 100 % certain at present may be because of the limited intellectual capacities of the believer’ implies that every theorem and axiom is, in fact, a conjecture. ( Rather should be seen / taken as a conjecture. ) Joshi’s Law of Gravity – If superultramodern scientific ideas are hypothetical then Newton’s ideas ( e.g. force ) were also hypothetical and even ( precisely ) false. However, they were and still are regarded as scientific. Science is about knowing, through speculation. It’s a systematic or reasonable guesswork where there is always, it seems, a room for new guesses modifying or overthrowing previous ones. - Dr Kedar Joshi, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. | October 16th, 2008 | Do You Say What You Mean? |
Do You Say What You Mean? It’s generally accepted that the majority of people learn to speak from a very early age, and on average a basic vocabulary is formed between the ages of four and six years old. As we get older our method of using language changes and we end up speaking in such a way that if everything we said was to be taken literally the effects could be amusing or tragic. With language, we know what we want to say; we often think we have said it; unfortunately, more often than not – we haven’t. Some years ago, I worked in a taxi office taking bookings over the phone. You would assume that it would be simple enough to say, “Could I book a taxi please?” Customer. “How long is your next taxi?” I find it fascinating that in all walks of life people use language the same way. They rarely say exactly what they mean clearly and concisely. This is everyone’s fault including my own because I’m occasionally as guilty as the next person for not saying what I mean, but we let it happen firstly because we know and understand what people are saying when they speak to us; secondly because we’ve got lazy. Language has always been constantly changing and developing because that’s what language does; so who knows what extra fun you will be able to have with it in say five or ten years. In the meantime, try and bear one thing in mind – the next time you order a taxi, ask about the availability of one – and not its external measurements.

| October 14th, 2008 | GIVE YOUR LINK A FACELIFT |
Got a great website? Got a long, drawn out URL link to go with it? Then you’ve probably experienced the agony of telling someone that long, drawn out URL string. Imagine what that link looks like on your business card, in your signature file, or in your resource box. Looks pretty bulky and long, doesn’t it? If so, then it’s probably time to give your link a “facelift.” The best way to do this is with a redirect URL, or simply, a redirect. First, for the uninitiated, a URL is the destination address of your website. Generally, it begins with ‘www.’ or ‘http://’. A redirect is a shorter URL address, or string, that when clicked, will still take you to your designated website. Redirects have some great features. They can add to the simplicity of your URL. They can also help make your string more memorable. They have the ability to camouflage your existing URL string. And, best of all, you can find them offered for FREE. But, there is a small trade off. You must agree to some sort of ad promoting the company that is providing the redirect, such as a popup or some sort of promotion page. Here is an example of the simplicity of a redirect. First, I’ll show you a long URL string that I have for one of my replicated sites: http://www.dmapower.com/d.cgi/1066/call.htm Notice how bulky that looks. That’s too much to communicate over the phone or even to remember. Here’s the redirect that I have for that address: That’s ‘easy to’ say and to remember. Plus, I included the keyword ‘phone’ in it for word recognition. Also, when that redirect is clicked on, the site visitor will notice that when they arrive at the site, they will see that simple redirect in their browser URL window, as opposed to the long string. The company that promotes that URL uses a popup ad too. Redirects can also be used to camouflage your URL. You might want to camouflage your link to keep the curiosity level up with your prospect. A redirect could help you to not “spill the beans.” Or, maybe you’d like to hide that link for your own promotional purposes to avoid confusion. Here’s a redirect that I have for another replicated website. Again, I included keywords in the string. http://www.goodhealth.findhere.org When you click this redirect on, or copy and paste it into your browser, you’ll also see a different example of how this company promotes their service. Did you notice the promotional page? A different approach from a popup ad. You might have also seen that the long link appears in the browser window after you click past the promotional page. (Remember that the first redirect example in this article showed only the redirect in the browser window.) Here is a partial list of companies that will provide FREE redirects. http://come.to/ http://1st-part.com/ http://www.ontheweb.nu/ “click on whatwedo” http://over.to/ http://webalias.com/ http://www.freesitex.com/shorturl01.shtml http://www.nothinginlife.com/ “Click webmaster tools”, click “URL redirects” http://www.bru.to/ Some companies charge as low as $5 annually for the use of their strings. They can go as high as $100. Of course, the optimum is getting your own domain name. This will enable you to create a brand, or recognizeable name that relates to your business. They can range anywhere from under $20 to $35 annually. Maybe more. For my e-zine’s subscription site, I have my domain name that I simply use to redirect to my ‘LeaderZKorner’ subscription site. http://www.lzkorner.com Click it on and that short URL is all you will see in your browser box. In fact, you will be redirected around a pretty lengthy website address. Now you have a way to STOP wasting time explaining that long URL to people by giving them something shorter or more memorable or both. And all by giving your link a quick facelift with a redirect. | October 13th, 2008 | Keeping it clean could give you a boost. |
Keeping it clean could give you a boost. By Mark White Everyone is striving to be at the top of the pile, we all want to get a better google PR and want this to reflect in more visitors to our site. But after we have followed all the advice about keyword placement and alt tags is there anything else we can do? I recently asked Tinu Abayomi-Paul the well respected google expert from freetrafficdirectory.com if having tidy html coding helped. She told me that although there is no absolute proof that it helped she had noticed that site’s with good xhtml code often seemed to get a higher ranking . It is my belief that when the spiders visit they prefer a clean house. So how do you know if your pages are up to scratch and up to search engine standards? There are a couple of sites that you can visit and get your pages spring cleaned for free so it’s worth a visit. The first site is site valet and this is in my humble opinion the most useful as they use an online version of html tidy , the program was originated by Dave Raggett and now at Source forge and it offers to tidy your pages straight off your hard drive, did I mention the word free, yes this valuable resource is free. The big bonus for me is that if Tinu is correct then this site can convert from html to xhtml, what a bonus it could be to raise my google PR at the same time as making my code better. The online report gives you a not to complicated list of warnings about missing tags, attributes and offers advice about what you could add or change for people with non graphical browsers. The magic is that site valet gives you your page code back in tidy form, just copy and paste the code for a spotless site. As well tidy the site offers the more rigorous but more technical page tidy so if you know exactly what you want and are a techie then the page tidy option is for you. The other site is net mechanic.com and is incredibly useful, they offer a free limited look at your site and offer advice similar to site valet. You can get a report for up to 5 pages of your site free and they offer other resources for you to try such as image optimisation programs, online link checking and browser compatibility checks. The cost of a years membership to sort out your site is really good value and well worth it if you have a larger site as the tools could save you weeks of work over a year. If you use the full resources available to you on both of these site then you should end up with very clean precise code that has the engines all in a tizzy over your level of code hygiene, they may even reward you with a better rank. About the author. Mark white has built and run 3 sites for the last 4 years, has worked in I.T. for 15 years and is actively involved in traffic/search engine related sites. His sites are tendollardownloads.com sunspeks.com and phone-bits.com Please feel free to reproduce this article ensuring all content and links are left intact. Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off

| October 12th, 2008 | Why Should You Use Google Ads on Your Website? |
If you are interested in earning income from your website, should you consider using the Google AdSense program to place targeted ads on your web pages? When I first considered this idea, I wasn’t sure if it was right for me. You see, I have a number of websites that promote affiliate links to products and services in my market. I felt that if I put Google ads on my pages they would compete with my affiliate sales. Sure, I knew you got paid when visitors clicked on these ads, but could it be a significant amount? Eventually, I saw that many other top marketers were using these ads on their pages. So I decided to dive in and give it a try, and after a year of using these ads here is what I can tell you. The first thing I noticed was the ease of use in using Google AdSense. Once you have joined the program for free, you can start creating your ad codes. And the neat thing is, you can customize the ads to your web pages. You can choose the color of the ads so that they match the color theme of your pages. You can choose from many different size ad blocks. For example, they have 468×60 regular banner size and 120×600 towers. This way, you can choose the size that is right for your page. Once you have made your selection, you simply cut and paste the html and place it where you want on your page, and your part is done! You can track your ads with ‘channels’. Let’s say your website has 10 pages. You can give each page it’s own channel so that when you log in to check your ad stats, you will see how many ad views and clicks you are getting on each page. This is helpful because it shows you where your ad revenue is coming from. I haven’t really noticed any competition with my other affiliate programs! I’ve realized that Google ads don’t compete with my website, they are an additional income stream. My sales and sign-ups didn’t plummet once I started using the ads. What I believe now is that a certain percentage of visitors aren’t going to convert into customers, so the ads are simply another way to generate revenue from visitors who weren’t going to be customers anyway. As long as your own offers are well laid out on your site, if a visitor is interested in what you have they will still become a customer. A good thing about Google ads is that they are ‘targeted’. This means that the ad content normally matches the content of your site. For example, if your site is about Boston terrier dogs, you will mostly get ads about Boston terrier dogs, or at least dogs. I can’t explain how they do it, but the ad html you post on your site picks up the keywords on your pages, and ads are generated that match the site keywords. This is good because the ads will match the target market for your website. And since the ads rotate on their own, it gives you ‘fresh’ content. Another bonus is that you are associating with a trusted source in Google. They are presently the number one search engine, which means that people know them and trust them. Having their presence on your website will therefore not lose you credibility. Yes, but how much can I make, you ask! That depends on how much traffic your website gets, and the subject matter of your website. Generally, the more visitors your website gets, the more clicks you will receive on the ads. Since you get paid per click, your earnings go up with more clicks. Secondly, the subject matter of your site plays a large part. Advertisers have to bid on the keywords for their ads, and the bids generally go higher if there are more advertisers bidding on the same keywords. Likewise, subjects that deal with highly profitable industries, like loans, mortgages, and home business, tend to get higher bids. The higher the bids, the more you get paid for click. To sum up, if your website deals with popular subject matter in a profitable field, and you get steady traffic, you should do well. In closing, if you decide to join the Google AdSense program, make sure you read their terms of service so that you follow all the rules. They have recently added some extra features to allow members to earn more, such as paying for referrals and toolbar downloads. The growth in online advertising keeps getting bigger and bigger with no signs of stopping. The AdSense program is an excellent way for you to benefit from this and earn an extra revenue stream from your website. I highly recommend it! Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off

| October 11th, 2008 | Virtual Tours and When They Can Help Your Website |
A virtual tour can refer to many things. Technically, anything that is online that in any way shows your website visitor your real location is a virtual tour. There are, of course, several ways to give a virtual tour. The first and most simple is a series of pictures. They can have captions explaining each picture, or not. I actually recommend pictures for most of my clients even if they are also going with one of the more high-tech solutions. This makes your site more accessible for those still using dial-up for their Internet connection. The second, and one I do not recommend, is using a video of your location. While this can show your location to potential clients, it’s analogous to using a black and white flyer with clip art when you have the capability of producing a professional full-color ad. Unless you have pros producing it, it ends up looking very amateur and brings down the professionalism of your site. The third is using what is generally referred to as a “virtual tour.” Now this can cause some confusion, as the two methods I previously mentioned can be referred to as a virtual tour. But when you’re using actual virtual tour technology, a visitor to your website can actually control the tour. They can virtually stand in a location, look around, turn in multiple directions and zoom in and out. This is the higher end virtual tour, but is often more affordable than one might think. So which of these would be appropriate for your business, if any? If your business is run from a location that many clients won’t see or just don’t need to see, there’s no reason for a virtual tour. I just have a small office, so I do not have a virtual tour on my website. You would not need one if you sold product exclusively online. If your business was run primarily out of a warehouse, there would be no reason for one. However, if you have a retail location, it is perfect. If you are trying to rent or sell property, it’s a great tool. If you have corporate headquarters, it’s perfect for those clients who are far away. Basically, if you have a location that you already have many clients and/or vendors coming to visit, a virtual tour can be a great tool. The tour helps visitors to your actual location because they can already be familiar with it before they even get there. If they find your website first and visit your location later, they know that they are in the right place because they’ve already virtually visited it. And if your website visitor never gets around to visiting your physical location, they still feel like they’ve been there. This can go a long way to demonstrating your openness and accessibility. They feel like they are welcome to visit your location at any time, even if they can’t. Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off
